For our Skagway excursion we choose to do the White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad. We pulled up to a chilly and foggy Skagway. We woke up around 6am so we had time to eat breakfast and drink coffee before we disembarked. Our excursion was set to begin a short half hour after we were able to disembark. We got in line about ten minutes before we could exit. There were not many people in line and it was a really easy exit. Once we were off the boat, it was a super short walk to the train. We choose not to do first class tickets as from what we could tell, there was not a lot of difference but there was a huge price difference. We were happy we had arrived to the train early as seats are first come and we were all able to sit together. The train car was chilly so i was also happy we had worn jackets and hats. The seats were benches. The girls sat across the aisle from us. Since the train turns around, it does not matter what side you sit on. You’ll see both sides.

There was a narrator telling the history of the gold rush and telling what things were as we passed them. There was also bottled water available at the back of each car for free. We were told this would not be the case so we had packed water and snacks. At the back of each car is a viewing platform that was fun to walk out on. There is also a small bathroom in each car.

The views from the train were stunning and totally worth it. It was fun to see a different view on the way back. We had to keep opening doors to keep the windows from fogging up, which kept the temperature inside cool. Towards the end of the train ride, they come through collecting tips for the narrators and people working. They also sell a DVD and hat as well. You end in Skagway and it’s a great time to explore the city.

Skagway is a small town. in my opinion, you don’t need much time to explore it. It was also very crowded as there were several ships docked when we were there. Think Disney after fireworks and you’re trying to shop on Main Street busy. Even with that, the shops had the best and cheapest souvenirs for things like sweatshirts and tshirts. We found some great stuff that was worth braving the crowds for.

There is also a National Park for the Klondike Gold Rush. Of course we got our Junior Rangers badges here and walked around. It’s a small but informative museum. We ended up walking back to the ship early and ate a late lunch on the ship. I was thankful we had done the train as it was really fun and beautiful.

Skagway is set in a beautiful setting. Watching the boat leave the light blue icy water with the snow capped mountains in the background was breathtaking. We enjoyed Skagway and especially enjoyed the train ride. We also appreciated how everything was within a very easy walking distance as well.
