Once we arrived in Seward, we decided to do a sled dog “excursion” (is it still called that if the cruise is over??). After much research we decided to go with seaveys Ididaride. They were home to three time champion Mitch Seavey and seemed like a really fun program. This way we also had something… Read more: Seaveys Ididaride

  • Hubbard Glacier- We Hit an Iceberg
Welcome to the last day of our Alaskan cruise. It was the most exciting, scary and terrifying night we had. As the ship tossed us about in our beds, we were terrified we may never make it back to shore on this boat. We kept waiting for them to call us to the lifeboats, but… Read more: Hubbard Glacier- We Hit an Iceberg
  • White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad & Skagway
For our Skagway excursion we choose to do the White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad. We pulled up to a chilly and foggy Skagway. We woke up around 6am so we had time to eat breakfast and drink coffee before we disembarked. Our excursion was set to begin a short half hour after we were… Read more: White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad & Skagway
  • Alaskan Cruise Packing List
When we started researching what to bring on our Alaskan cruise, it was so hard to find the right information. After the cruise, I made a list of what we actually used and enjoyed. I wanted to share that with you. Items to help with packing. We were really nervous to check all of our… Read more: Alaskan Cruise Packing List

We had a fun day in Seward planned and fortunately for us, the very late arrival did not mess up any plans. Honestly, even if it had, we were so happy to be there, it would not have mattered.

Disembarking was a mess. Due to the late arrival, there was so much chaos and people needing to catch buses to flights etc. We were asked to wait in the Schooner Bar with other suite guests. Sometimes being in a suite does have it perks, this was one of those times. We, with another family, were escorted to the front of the line and able to exit quickly and easily.

Once off the boat, we were in what looked like a local or small airport hanger. Here is where any luggage you sent with Royal Caribbean was waiting to be picked up. It was a small space but had a coffee stand and clean bathrooms and a beautiful view of the mountains right outside. Outside were limos, taxis, charter buses and a very small car rental place. All of these would get you back to Anchorage. The taxis etc will not even speak to you unless you have all your luggage and are prepared to pay to go to Anchorage. They will not take you into Seward.

We needed to store our luggage for the day, our train ride was not until that evening. The train depot was not open yet to store it there. In the terminal, we found a business that would store your luggage all day for $10 a bag and deliver right to the train station. To make it better, it was two sisters who had started this business with their Dad, who was the driver.

Once our luggage was safely deposited, we even sent the girls large backpacks with them so they didn’t have to lug them around all day, we set off to explore. We were being picked up by Seavys sled dogs for a fun outing but had an hour to kill. We found the free shuttle and rode downtown. You can also walk. We found a great little nature market with a bakery that has gluten free doughnuts and treats.

After grabbing some snacks and water for the day, we headed to the water front. It was beautiful and quiet. After eating our snacks we made our way back up the long walk to the cruise terminal. It was a longer walk than we thought and we were not close to where the free shuttle will pick you up. We arrived back to the cruise terminal, sweating and out of breath but we made it time to get picked up for our sled dog fun. (See next post)

After spending a fun few hours at Seavys, we asked to be dropped back off downtown to find some lunch. Let me warn you, Seward is an adorable, sleepy, little town. There is not many places to eat after one pm. We found a food truck with gluten free options that were great and went back to the market for a few other things but most restaurants had closed at this point. We walked around Seward as we had several hours to kill before the train.

After some food we found the Kenji Fjords National Park and of course, after exploring it, did the Junior Ranger Program. I found out there is also an adult version of this and I was very excited to complete it and get a pin.

We walked around the harbor and saw our ship, still in harbor. It did not look she was going anymore soon. It was heartbreaking to see.

We spent the rest of our hours walking around, going into the shops and sitting by the water. There is an aquarium you can visit there as well. Finally it was time to ride the train to our next stop, Anchorage.
